Material Matters – Part 4: Color & Expression

In the previous parts, we explored how materials like metal and acetate influence the structure, durability and feel of a frame, as well as how innovation can improve functionality through clip-on systems.

But there is another dimension of eyewear design that is just as important.

Color.

In today’s eyewear market, most frames remain within a familiar palette. Black, brown and grey dominate, offering safe and versatile choices that work for a wide range of users.

But safe does not always mean expressive. At Sossa Eyewear, we see color not as decoration, but as an essential part of design

More Than a Visual Choice

Color shapes how a frame is perceived. It influences contrast, highlights facial features and interacts with light in ways that change throughout the day.

A frame in color does not simply sit on the face. It becomes part of the wearer’s presence.

This is why color is never an afterthought in our process. It is considered from the very beginning  alongside shape and material.

Built Into the Material

Working with acetate allows us to explore color in a way that feels intentional and refined.

Especially with laminated acetate, where multiple layers are combined, color is not applied to the surface. It is built into the structure of the frame itself. This creates depth, subtle transitions and a more dynamic interaction with light. Depending on the angle and environment, the same frame can reveal different tones and nuances.

From Frame to System

As we continued developing the Spring / Summer 2026 collection, we asked ourselves how color could extend beyond the frame itself. Traditionally, clip-on lenses are dark and neutral. When applied, they often cover the frame and reduce its visual identity.

For a brand that places strong emphasis on color, this felt like a limitation.

So we approached clip-ons differently.

We developed colored clip-on lenses designed to complement the frame rather than hide it. Instead of replacing the visual identity of the frame, they work together with it, preserving the original colors, materials and details.

The result is a more balanced experience, where functionality and design support each other.

A Matter of Identity

At Sossa Eyewear, color is not about standing out for the sake of visibility. It is about offering choice.

Choice to express personality. Choice to adapt to different moments. Choice to wear something that feels personal, not generic.

Because eyewear is not only about how you see the world. It is also about how the world sees you.
